Open rubric →How to use the rubrics
Open the rubric for the sport, pillar, and age band you coach. Each rubric has four sub-skills with concrete behavioral anchors at 3, 5, 7, and 9. Watch a player for two or three live moments per sub-skill, then rate against the anchor — not against the rest of your roster.
Each rubric also includes a 60-second sideline quick start, common rating biases to avoid, and phrasing templates that turn a number into a useful coach-to-parent note. The rubric is the floor; what you do with it is the practice.
Why it is free
The rubrics are the methodology, and the methodology should be open. The PlayerFocus app provides the substrate that turns rubric ratings into reports, weekly summaries, season stories, and cross-academy benchmarks — but the rubric itself belongs to youth sports, not to one company. Use them in PlayerFocus, in your own template, or taped to a clipboard.

- glossaryFour Pillars (Youth Sports Development)
The Four Pillars are the four domains of youth athlete development — Technical, Tactical, Athleticism, and Mental — used by academies to evaluate, plan, and communicate progress holistically rather than by score alone.
- glossaryPillar Rating
A 1–10 score on a single development pillar (Technical, Tactical, Athleticism, or Mental), anchored to age-appropriate behaviors so the same number means the same thing across coaches and seasons.
